Natural Waves Program for ADD/ADHD

Winnie-the-Pooh and Friends Show Us the Five of Six Types of ADD/ADHD
  • Winnie-the-Pooh Type ADD - Inattentive, distractible, disorganized. Nice, but lives in a cloud.
  • Tigger Type ADD - Inattentive, impulsive, hyperactive, restless, bouncy.
  • Eeyore Type ADD - Inattentive, with chronic low- grade depression.
  • Piglet Type ADD - Trouble shifting attention, excessive worry, easily startled.
  • Rabbit Type ADD - Trouble shifting attention, inflexible, argumentative.

And then the non-Pooh type: Troubled Type ADD - Irritable, aggressive, impulsive, defiant, disobedient. Learning problems.

And then there is Wol "Owl" who has dyslexia...

What is ADD/ADHD?

Parents and Schools are increasingly recognizing Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and ADHD (ADD with Hyperactivity) as a major difficulty which produces academic underachievement. With an estimated 6% of school age children affected, you can expect almost every class to have someone with ADD or ADHD.

Their problem may include short attention span, distractibility, and difficulties organizing and completing their assignments. Many also have an impulsive style; they start work without checking directions, blurt out answers, and have trouble awaiting their turn.

ADD is not an illness and it is not a disorder in the usual sense. It is a constellation of temperamental traits, and a styles of thinking.

There is no objective test (line a blood test of MRI) to diagnose ADD/ADHD. Diagnosis is based on observation of behavior and long-term school performance. There is considerable controversy as to its existence as a medical condition.

Your Bright Amazing Child's Brain

The brain of the child with ADD can be thought of as producing a "flickering light". Everyone's brain produces electricity and the different frequencies of the brain waves are associated with different mental states.

People with ADD produce an abundance of slow waves and show less fast wave activity. A sudden burst of slow wave activity - in the middle of a complex task is equivalent to the individual being "tuned out" for that moment in time.

People with ADD can attest to the frustration of continually finding that, despite the best of intent and even despite major interest in a topic, they miss key points and sections of a lecture only minutes after it has begun.

Although most people occasionally experience getting to the end of a page of reading only to realize that their mind has been somewhere else, persons with ADD have not developed specific counter strategies do this most of the time.

With ADD, one may be thinking very intently and creatively internally while ignoring the teacher. In addition, even when the individual has not been thinking about something else internally, their mind has not, so to speak, gone into gear and become actively involved in the passage. Being actively involved requires a state associated with faster brain waves.

Advantages of Having ADD-type Brain Wave Patterns

What may be confusing to parents is that often the individual with ADD may exhibit superb concentration and focus in specific situations. This may even, at times, be superior to their peers!

Children with ADD may, for example, become totally absorbed in games of Nintendo, certain T.V. programs, building with materials such as Lego or Play mobile and so on. Only some of these activities are exceptionally fast changing therefore this is certainly not the only factor which might account for their intense concentration.

The mental state of hyper-focus which ADD people are capable of is very adaptive in a certain situations. On the other hand, it can irritate a parent whose repeated calls are ignored because the child is in hyper-focus in front of the T.V. or Nintendo!

Many scholars and senior businesspersons who have ADD note that they can "lock in" to focus on documents that they are creating, or plans they are developing and virtually nothing can distract them when they are in this type of activity.

This in turn may have made them better students than persons who have never had to work at learning how to learn. One example of such a person is a brilliant physicist who became an expert in test- taking strategies and has published 18 books on that subject. Yet he still has trouble sitting through a lecture without impulsively calling out a question or comment!

The life history of many creative geniuses, from Mozart to Edison and Einstein, suggest that they had some characteristics of ADD individuals.

What makes the difference in whether a person with attention problems is a success or not?

It depends on whether they the master of those brain wave patterns, or are they the victim of them.

Natural Waves Program for ADD/ADHD:
ADD/ADHD Therapy Without Medication

Fortunately, I am offering a new approach to helping both children and adults self-regulate their brain waves. Natural Waves Program is an approach to ADD/ADHD that includes a number of therapy approaches, one of which is called Low Energy Neurofeedback System (or LENS).

Within 20 to 40 sessions children start producing brain wave patterns which are associated with focusing and concentrating. Unlike stimulants, LENS appears to have a direct long-term effect on increasing the child's ability to remain focused and spend extended periods concentrating in a problem-solving manner.

There is a significant decrease in the phenomenon of "tuning out" when the child needs to carry out an assignment or listen intently in class.

In addition, LENS appears to have an effect similar to stimulants, in that it increases the child's "natural guards" to inhibit or avoid impulsive actions.

Children already taking medication can continue while under LENS therapy, however, most find that they can gradually reduce the dosage they improve. I never recommend changing medication. That is the task of the prescribing doctor. This, of course, requires your close coordination with the prescribing doctor. Tell your doctor about LENS and seek advice about regulating your child's medications.

LENS Compared to Traditional Neurofeedback

Traditional neurofeedback (NF) training also is a successful mode of therapy, it has certain disadvantages compared to LENS. There is a local provider of traditional neurofeedback. Click HERE to visit their website. Traditional neurofeedback is usually provided by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Traditional NF requires the child to "pay attention" to certain tasks on the computer-EEG system, to perform certain mental tasks. This can lead to frustration and feelings of failure. Exactly what you do not want.

All LENS requires is the child to sit with eyes closed for a brief period of time, usually just a few seconds. There is nothing to do, to task to accomplish, and no task to perform or fail. Traditional NF requires the doctor to decide where and how the brain is to be "re-regulated", typically by comparing a child's brain wave patterns to a standard database.

LENS therapy is self-regulating. The LENS system senses your child's brain wave patterns, and gently whispers an extremely tiny radio wave to the brain, in a pattern the brain recognizes. The child's brain uses this radio wave to help it be more flexible and self-regulating.

Our LENS therapy is part of a chiropractic approach to integrating the mind and body. ADD/ADHD children typically have dysregulation of their musculoskeletal system, revealed in subtle patterns of muscle weakness or clumsiness. LENS is combined with other gentle and effective therapy as part of the Natural Waves Program. They are able not only to think better, they move better as well.

The result is a brain that can respond to normal stimuli without going haywire; a brain that can focus or relax as needed; a brain that can express itself in its own way, with its own personality, with its own self.

Natural Waves Program for ADD/ADHD includes an initial consultation and evaluation. Each person has an individualized program that best suits his or her needs and goals.

Program elements:
  • Chiropractic Treatment
  • Low Energy Neurofeedback (LENS)
  • Freeze Framer Therapy
  • Cold Laser Therapy
  • Good Vibrations Therapy
  • Cyclic Exercise
  • Nutritional Supplementation Evaluation
  • Coordination with your other doctors

Program sessions average twice per week.

Cost and the duration of treatment depend on several factors that are determined during your initial consultation and evaluation. Everything will be explained to you before you have to decide anything.

Natural Waves Program for ADD/ADHD, depending on your particular circumstances, is usually covered by insurance.

Benefits Of Medications To Treat Your Child's ADD/ADHD

It is effective to reduce the symptoms.

It is what everyone else is doing. You will be in the mainstream. You will not have to defend the use of other methods that do not depend on medications.

It is cheaper. The total long-term cost of medications is more expensive, but you probably have insurance coverage that make is cheaper out of pocket to medicate your child.

It is easier. You don't have to spend time and energy taking your child to the doctor's office for therapy.

It makes a lot of people happy. Teachers no longer have to contend with your child's behavior and inattention. Your child may feel more in control using medications. Your medical doctor will see that you are following his/her advice. Things go easier around the house, so you are happy too.

You have to take the medications for life.

Dr. Bailey Asks some important questions of interest to Bryan residents - Chiropractor Bryan Dr. Bailey Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
Are aches and pains good or bad?
While aches or pains may be unpleasant, they're merely warning signs. As a Bryan chiropractor, I see this all the time. The pain is not the problem! It just means a limitation has been reached and something needs to change. That's when we get to work correcting the underlying cause.
